Covariation and phenotypic integration in chemical communication displays: biosynthetic constraints and eco-evolutionary implications

Chemical communication is ubiquitous. The identification of conserved structural elements in visual and acoustic communication is well established, but comparable information on chemical communication displays (CCDs) is lacking. We assessed the phenotypic integration of CCDs in a meta‐analysis to characterize patterns of covariation in CCDs and identified functional or biosynthetically constrained modules. Poorly integrated plant CCDs (i.e. low covariation between scent compounds) support the notion that plants often utilize one or few key compounds to repel antagonists or to attract pollinators and enemies of herbivores. Size-consistent ab initio calculation of the electric quadrupole moment of Cl2

Abstract The molecular electric quadrupole moment ( Θ ) of Cl 2 has been calculated using SDCI, and (SC) 2 -SDCI wave functions as well as CCSD, CCSD(T), and CC3 methods. All these correlation methods are single reference. All of them, but SDCI, are free of the size-extensivity error. The variation of Θ from the separated atoms to the equilibrium region is reported. The present results leads to an estimated value of 2.3520 a.u. (10.55 × 10 −40 Cm 2 ) corresponding to a CC(3) calculation at the CBS approach and including the ro-vibrational and thermal averaging corrections. This value is compatible with two experimental values and points to one of them as slightly more reliable.
Vertical spectrum of ethene: uncontracted versus contracted correlation methods and the role of the adapted molecular orbitals

Abstract Ethylene vertical excitation energies (VEE) below 9.5 eV have been calculated with the complete active-space singles and doubles configuration interaction self-consistent size-consistent dressing (SC) 2 CAS–SDCI. The mean of the absolute deviation from experiment for the calculated VEE are 0.14, 0.05 and 0.03 eV for three different molecular orbital (MO) sets tried. The results show that an uncontracted method and a realistic MO set avoid the difficulties present in the calculation of the strongly mixed Rydberg-valence 1B 1u states.

The purpose of this study was to establish GENEA (Gravity Estimator of Normal Everyday Activity) cut-points for discriminating between six relative-intensity activity levels in middle-aged recreational marathoners. Nighty-eight (83 males and 15 females) recreational marathoners, aged 30-45 years, completed a cardiopulmonary exercise test running on a treadmill while wearing a GENEA accelerometer on their non-dominant wrist. This study compared heart rate (HR), oxygen uptake (V[Combining Dot Above]O2), percentage of maximal HR (%HRmax), percentage of maximal V[Combining Dot Above]O2, and cadence (Cad) related to the anaerobic threshold (AT) during a water cycling maximal test between heart rate deflection point (HRDP) and ventilatory (VT) methods. In addition, the correlations between both methods were assessed for all variables. The test was performed by 27 men in a cycle ergometer in an aquatic environment. The protocol started at a Cad of 100 b·min-1 for 3 minutes with subsequent increments of 15 b·min-1 every 2 minutes until exhaustion. Solvation of a probe molecule by fluid supercooled water in a hydrogel at 200 K

By combining electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements on a nitroxide probe and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), we demonstrate existence of liquid supercooled water in a silica hydrogel with high hydration level down to temperatures of at least 198 K. Besides the major fraction of liquid supercooled water, a minor fraction crystallizes at about 236 K during cooling and melts at 246 K during heating. The liquid domains are of sufficient size to solvate the nearly spherical paramagnetic probe molecule TEMPO with a diameter of about 6 angstrom. Size Dependence of Tracer Diffusion in Supercooled Liquids

We have determined by forced Rayleigh scattering the diffusion coefficients D of several photochromic tracers with van der Waals radii between 0.38 and 8 nm (the largest ones being photolabeled polystyrene micronetworks) in 10 glass-forming liquids at temperatures between the glass temperature Tg and ∼1.2Tg. The results were analyzed in terms of power law plots, D(T) ∝ T/η(T)ξ, where η is the solvent shear viscosity, and temperature shifts, D(T) ∝ T/η(T + ΔT). The shift ΔT was related with the width of the rotational correlation time distribution via the time−temperature superposition principle.
Spectral density of the correlation matrix of factor models: a random matrix theory approach.

We studied the eigenvalue spectral density of the correlation matrix of factor models of multivariate time series. By making use of the random matrix theory, we analytically quantified the effect of statistical uncertainty on the spectral density due to the finiteness of the sample. We considered a broad range of models, ranging from one-factor models to hierarchical multifactor models.
